Most people choose a pillow the same way they choose a pair of shoes in the sale: by feel, in a hurry, through a layer of packaging that tells them almost nothing. The result is two years of either waking with a stiff neck or gradually flattening something that once seemed perfectly adequate. There is a better framework. It starts with one question.
How do you sleep?
Not how long, not how well. How, physically, does your body spend most of the night.
Why sleeping position is the only starting point that matters
The neck is doing different things depending on whether you sleep on your side, your back, or your front. On your side, the head is suspended above a shoulder and needs meaningful height to stay level with the spine. On your back, the neck has some natural support from the mattress and needs far less loft, just enough to fill the gap without pushing the head forward. On the front, the neck is already rotated, and any significant height makes that worse.
This is why firmness and loft are not interchangeable ideas. Firmness describes how much resistance the pillow offers under the weight of your head. Loft is the height it maintains. A pillow that compresses flat under your head has loft but little firmness. One that holds its shape offers both. For side sleepers, you need the combination. For front sleepers, too much of either creates a problem.
Get this wrong and even an expensive, well-made pillow works against you.
The range, from softest to firmest
Every pillow in the Martian Made range is adjustable. Fill can be removed or added to change the height and feel. This is worth stating plainly because most people have no idea it is possible, and it changes the calculation considerably. You are not locked into what arrives in the box.
Velistra is the softest and the flagship. The fill is a blended-density microfibre that gives a plush, hotel-style feel without packing down into a hard lump. Because the fill is adjustable, it genuinely works across all three positions. Remove some fill for front sleepers, leave it full for back sleepers who want a soft landing, or add a little more if you run warmer and tend to sink. It is the pillow for people who move around during the night, or who share a bed with someone whose preferences differ. One product, adjusted differently for two people, is a reasonable household solution.
LunaCore Hybrid sits in the middle of the range. The fill is 50% blue gel-infused shredded memory foam and 50% 3D hollow fibre, which means it has more structure than microfibre but is not rigid. The honeycomb bamboo and polyester cover helps with airflow, which matters at night when the head generates heat against a pillow for hours. This is the pillow for back and side sleepers who want support with some give, rather than a pillow that either collapses or refuses to move at all. The shredded memory foam contours without committing entirely to the shape of the head the way a solid block of foam would.
StarFirm is the firmest in the range, built specifically for side sleepers. Shredded memory foam with a cooling PE gel infusion. It holds its height under the weight of the head, keeps the neck in line with the spine, and does not compress down to half its thickness by 3am. If you are a dedicated side sleeper who regularly wakes with neck discomfort, or who has tried softer pillows and found them wanting within weeks, this is the end of the search. It is not the right answer for back sleepers, who would find the height excessive, and it is entirely the wrong answer for front sleepers, for whom this much firmness would rotate the neck further than it should go.
CoolBreeze is the entry point of the range, built around temperature management through the night. If heat is your primary complaint and firmness is secondary, this is where to start.
How the adjustable fill changes the comparison
The standard advice is to buy a different pillow for each sleeping position. This is not wrong, but it is also a household with three different pillows in it. The more practical point is that adjustability creates overlap between the rungs of the ladder.
The Velistra, for example, can be softened to suit a front sleeper and firmed up to suit a back sleeper depending on how much fill you leave in. The LunaCore Hybrid, adjusted down, starts to overlap with the softer end of what a light back sleeper needs. This does not make them interchangeable, but it does mean the comparison is less binary than it first appears.
The one place adjustability does not close the gap entirely is the StarFirm. Side sleepers who need genuine alignment support need a pillow that holds height under sustained pressure. Removing fill from a firmer pillow moves you toward the medium range, but it does not replicate a soft pillow, and adding fill to a soft one does not replicate this kind of structural support. If you are a committed side sleeper, you should start at the top of the firmness ladder, not work up to it.
Three questions, one answer
One: What is your primary sleeping position?
Front sleeper: start with the Velistra, adjusted down. Back sleeper: Velistra at full fill or LunaCore Hybrid. Side sleeper with average build: LunaCore Hybrid. Side sleeper who needs firm support: StarFirm.
Two: Do you sleep hot?
If yes, the LunaCore Hybrid's breathable cover and gel-infused fill handle this reasonably well. StarFirm also carries a gel infusion. The CoolBreeze is built around this problem specifically, though it sits at the entry level. Heat management in a pillow is partly fill and partly cover construction, so both matter.
Three: Do you and your partner sleep differently?
One adjustable pillow, configured differently for each side of the bed, is not a compromise. It is the point of the adjustable fill. That said, if one of you is a confirmed side sleeper who needs StarFirm-level support, the gap between that and a front sleeper's requirements is wide enough that separate pillows make sense.
The only thing a framework cannot replicate is the first night. Which is, of course, precisely why the fill being adjustable matters more than anything written on the box.
